Staff Pick of the Month – July

Every month, one of the iRIDE team shares a product they genuinely use, trust, and recommend. These aren't just products sitting on a shelf—they're products that have earned a place in our own workshops, toolboxes, and bikes.

Name: Jamie (Jamie Harbour)
Position: Workshop - Tinker Extraordinaire
What you riding: Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL6, Crux 4 and Epic 8

What's your Pick: Hot Wax Chain Treatment (Silca Secret Chain Blend)

Why: Chain waxing has been around longer than most people realise — there are reports of riders doing it as far back as the 1980s, though back then it was far more involved because quick-release master links didn't exist. The modern version, using proprietary wax blends and a slow cooker, gained real traction from around 2013 and has gone mainstream in the last five years. Systems like the Silca Chain Waxing Kit have made the whole process genuinely easy in comparison to the old rice cooker method. .

I've been waxing my own chains for almost ten years, and the efficiency data backs up what I’ve felt on the road. Confirmed by Zero Friction Cycling (Found Here:)

Performance advantages aside, it is drivetrain longevity that is the real game changer.  You can expect easily double the lifespan from your Chains, Cassette and Chainrings over regular oil based drip lubes, which from experience seeing bikes come through our workshop having essentially a perfect finishing paste eating their pricey drivetrains away after just a few rides.

The process takes some upfront effort: strip the factory grease off a new chain, submerge it in molten wax, hang it to cool, then break the links before fitting — the Silca system makes this straightforward. Re-waxing is needed roughly every 400–600km depending on conditions, which is why most people run two chains in rotation: one on the bike, one ready to go.

I swap out my chains way more often than needed. Especially if I'm riding in  wet conditions.
I run multiple chains on all my bikes and then do a bulk re-wax when I install my last pre-waxed chain on a bike.  It's a post Sunday morning ride relax session with good music, my Wax pot and a bee..  I mean Protein shake…

Come down to the store if you want to get into more of the nitty gritty details.  There are pros and cons, but the pros far outweigh any of the cons.  Especially once you have the process of chain removal, clean, wax and install down to a fine art.

Our Silca Wax program is what I would suggest to anyone wanting to get sorted straight away, but doesn't want to do the waxing themselves..
The program is 2x Chains (Pre Waxed) and the 5 subsequent waxes.
For an XT/Ultegra 12spd pack RRP is : $405 -  (Price changes depending on what chain you choose)
